Cartier, founded in 1847, is synonymous with luxury goods and outstanding quality. Some of the most beautiful jewelry ever made has come from Cartier, and when it began watchmaking in 1888, Cartier applied its incredibly high standards to timepieces. Cartier watches became classic collectibles.

Louis-Francois Cartier supplied the Imperial Court of Napoleon III, and the list of famous and wealthy people who became his clients was incredible. Cartier bought his movements from the best Swiss manufacturers and cased them in a factory in Paris that he built just for that purpose in 1950. The Cartier family sold its interest in the company in 1965, and a group of investors took over all the Cartier interests around the world in the next 15 years. Cartier International was formed in 1981 and began an intense program of research and development. It acquired Baume et Mercier, Piaget, and other companies and set up a factory in conjunction with Ebel to produce timepieces.
