In the 1970s, the Swiss watch industry was sinking into a recession due in great part to the competition coming from Japan. In 1979, the Delirium, the world's thinnest wristwatch with a limited number of components was launched in Switzerland. That event, along with the founding of SMH, the Swiss Corporation for Microelectronics and Watchmaking Industries marked the upturn in the industry's fortunes.
The SMH answered the industry crisis with the introduction of the Swatch watch, a slim plastic watch with only 51 components based on the Delirium. The first Swatch went on sale in 1983 and combined top quality with highly affordable prices. Now, over 200 million units later, it is one of the most successful wristwatches of all time.
Beginning in 1984, all Swatches were given a names as well as a number, and when the first Swatch “Specials” were introduced, the collecting really began.
Swatches are more than fun watches – they demonstrate that Swiss technology and expertise can be used for something both visually exciting and as sturdy and reliable as big stainless steel sports watch. And just to show that how good Swatches are, the company produced a run of 4,843 Swatches that were issued with chronometer certificates. Subjected to an amazing range of tests (such as freezing temperatures, 90-degree humidity, and being left on a vibration machine for 24 hours), the watches demonstrated how good they were. Since so few Swatch chronometers were produced, it’s not easy to find them.
Swatch watches are very popular with collectors. Some Swatches to watch for: Pop Swatch, Mechanicals (Time to Move), Stop Swatch, Swatch Scuba, and Swatch Pager. You can find limited editions, special and singles, and whole series by artists. The permutations are endless!
