Seiko has a strong tradition of technological innovation, creating fine timepieces since 1881. When it introduced the quartz watch, Seiko was already manufacturing more mechanical watches than any other company in the world.

Although quartz clocks were available, creating a quartz wristwatch was a challenge. It required miniaturization, low-power, low voltage integrated circuits, miniature quartz crystal oscillators, small batteries, micromotors, and electronic displays.

So when the Seiko 35 SQ Astron quartz watch appeared in Tokyo on Christmas Day, 1969, a new era of watch history began. With a limited production run of only 100 pieces, these Seiko watches had analog dials, used a hybrid circuit (a combination of circuits on a single substrate which was an intermediate step beteen discrete circuits and integrated circuits) and a quartz oscillator with a frequency of 8,192 cycles per second. Seiko claimed these watches were accurate to within about 5 seconds a month, a minute a year. Since then, Seiko has introduce many other innovations and remains a world leader in watch production.
